I previously posted about the release of the Blackberry 8820 on Cingular/ATT. The bug question at the time was whether ATT would support UMA to leverage the Wifi connectivity in the BB. Unfortunately, there is no evidence that this is the case. It looks like it is just a normal phone that can connect to Wifi.
This brings up an interesting question: What exactly is the value of WiFi on a cellphone? The small web browser interface doesn’t provide a particular good web surfing experience and I am not sure how it would benefit from having Wifi. The one hope is that this might be a platform for UMA in the future if/when ATT comes out with it.
At this point, I am trying to decide whether the 8820 is a good investment. An alternative option could be one of the T-Mobile Blackberries that are rumored to support Wifi and one would assume UMA. It will be interesting to see when these come available and confirm that UMA is indeed supported.
