I recently was perusing Slashdot.org and saw the following post. How amazing is that? You could have a 12 CPU cluster in a box the size of a desktop machine or you could go slihtly larger and get up to 96 CPUs! The system is using the less powerful Transmeta Crusoe CPUs; however, that is still some incredible computing power in such a small form factor. The pricing is also very competitive. You can get the 12 CPU version including 1 TB+ of storage for around $10k. That is less than some high end workstations.
This is a classic example of Moore’s law in action. That said, I am certain that I need this level of horsepower for this server. Now, if I could only figure out how to convince my wife….
